Galle

Galle is a major city and is the administrative capital of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort, thought to be the largest remaining colonial fortress in Asia. Galle is also famous for its Maritime Archaeology Museum, which displays naval craft, artillery guns, pottery, maps and even sailor's shoes. Also inside the fort is the Dutch Reformed Church, whilst in Galle Town there is St Mary's Cathedral.

Boat ride

Do a boat trip on the Ginganga River, enjoying the riverside flora and fauna. The best time for a boat trip is in the early morning or late afternoon.

Cooking lesson

Learn to cook Sri Lankan food using traditional methods, and enjoy the results at the end of the class. Starts at 10am.

Cycling tour

Take to your bicycle and enjoy a guided tour of Galle. Visit the fort and the town's colourful fish, vegetable and fruit markets, before cycling past paddy fields to the Buddhist temple at Yatagala and making your way to Unawatuna Beach and Rumassala Hill. You may also see the stilt fishermen at work around Koggala.

Galle Fort

Wander the streets of the famous Galle Fort and visit the Dutch Reformed Church, the Historical Mansion Museum and the Maritime Archaeology Museum, as well as stopping for lunch in one of the many cafes and restaurants. Don't forget to do a tour of the ramparts too, ideally at sunset.

Maritime Archaeology Museum

The Maritime Archaeology Museum is a fascinating place which displays a number of objects found during underwater explorations. Some of the items on display are almost 800 years old and most were found in the sea off the Southern coast. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, closed on public holidays.
