Yala National Park

Yala National Park is the most visited and the second-largest national park in Sri Lanka. Situated in the Southeast of the country, Yala is made up of 5 blocks but only 2 are open to the public. Ruhuna National Park is block one, and Kumana National Park which is best reached from Arugam Bay is block two. Ruhuna is recognized as being the best park to see leopard in, but it is also home to deer, monkeys and buffalo as well as varied birdlife.

There are also two important pilgrim sites within the park boundary, Sithulpahuwa and Magul Vihara. Sithulpahuwa Temple is situated on top of a rock surrounded by thick vegetation.

Kataragama is close to the famous Yala national park. It is a pilgrimage town and is where the Hindu Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya and the Buddhist Kiri Vehera Stupa can be found. Kataragama festival is normally held in July or August and is organized by the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya. A large number of pilgrims visit Kataragama during this time.
